What does art mean to you?

As an artist my process entails seeking relief through artistic expression. Art has always been a coping mechanism for me as well as a means of release. Releasing old ideas of self, identity, and restrictions; welcoming new realities, new spaces and growth. In my practice I often create portraiture reflecting on my own identity and the reflection I see of myself in others. I use crosshatching to enhance texture on my subject and sometimes thicker lines to create atmosphere in the background. The repetitive nature of the technique brings me peace. In terms of my painting practice I’m satisfied by the opportunity to evoke a feeling of familiarity through line, color, and imagery. I often lean toward a surrealist approach, straying away from actual skin tones to highlight the emotions happening beneath the surface. I believe many of us wear masks to guard our inner man and through my work you experience a revelation. I’m quite reserved in manner so art for me tends to bridge the gap between my thoughts and taking action.
